You might want to look at /var/log/messages. Most distro log what they are doing here. As to commands you can use: more - space bar to move ahead a page, B to move back a page, enter to move ahead 1 line at a time. for more info on more use man more less - all more commands work but also arrow keys can be used as well. for more info on less man less Hope that helps.
