I have a hardware / software project that I have been wanting to do for a long time. It consists of decoding infrared signals like those from a tv remote, process those signals and output currently via RS232 but ideally via USB to a desktop application (windows currently). I want to replace these units with something more flexible. For the longest time I have been wanting to use something like a PIC processor to do this.

Picking up the latest Linux Journal, I found some ARM9 single board computer that sells for $119USD (unfortunately, you have to buy a hundred of them) and boots TS-Linux from on-board flash. Are there any miniature linux and hardware gurus out there that have comments. (Still looking for Feb Linux Journal.)
