I'm considering purchasing a laptop on which I'll be running Linux. Does anyone have any recommendations for a laptap? I don't need anything terribly spectacular since I'm not so much into the gaming and all that jazz. I just need something that will work with X. Any pointers/recommendations are welcome.

I am not, however, in the market for a used laptop.

I would look at the Celeron M laptops from Acer. They even come prepartitioned and they have a version which comes with Linux only. So no Windows Tax.
