Cam,
If you want to learn about LINUX, then the only way is to "get into
trouble" and try to dig your way out...
Rather than doing an automatic install--mind you, I use slackware, so
take what I say with a grain of salt--do a 'manual' install; even
partition/format the drive before you do the installation. Select the
package to install manually; browse the kernel listing and 'pick' one
yourself--when it comes the time to install the bootloader, select
MBR...Make sure you wipe the drive(s) clean before your next
attempt...Make sure you format each partition in turn, including your
swap; even select the inode size 'manually'...And if it doesn't work,
try again. Sure it may be frustrating, but when it finally works your
brain will reward you with a rush of endorphins to make you 'feel
good' :-)
Juan,
Thank you for the encouragement. You are correct...never just "accept" the
defaults. And typically, I have always done exactly that in the past and
have felt that endorphin and happy dance kind fo rush.
Obvioculy I couldn't do anything with the dead disk, but by the time I got
to trying to use Suse I was looking at a very small time frame and thought I
would try and shortcut. NEVER AGAIN!!! I have been getting myself into
trouble at work doing that same thing. Not reading manuals...assuming
this... assuming that....just have to learn to "Read (and follow) The Fine
Manual (RTFM).'
It just isn't worth the hassle. I finally went with Kubuntu just as aquick
down and dirty KDE environment that I could get up quick. It is actaually
finishing up as we speak.. just hope it works as this has been quite a few
late nights lately and my fiance is feeling neglected...another Linux Widow
in the making! LOL
Thanks all for the encouagement.. ideas... and may the laughter you had at
my exspense be enjoyed.. it was earned. It is ok if you laugh at what a
tool I can be sometimes. I do and so does Lisa.
Cameron

Cam,
I would never laugh "at" you...I may--on ocasions--laugh "with"
you...Even if you're not looking :-)
Seriously though, we have all been there. God knows, I have nuked a
perfectly good installation doing the silliest of things...
What I have done to save time is to write a quick--and very
dirty--script that downloads on install the packages I want (You have
to install a minimal installtion w/network support of course)...I can
have a minty fresh intallation in about an hour without doing a damn
thing....Of course; it only works for slackware
