Try selecting purge as the option for the software.  Once removed clean
up (ie. remove) any settings or folders in your home directory (eg. rm
-fr .openoffice)

Then run apt-get clean from the command prompt (either as root or by
using sudo).

Finally run your package manager (Synaptic) and install what should now
be a fresh copy of open office.
