In our environment, I provide a remote print server by way of a D-Link
print server box attached to our internal network.

IIRC, I set up the print server part through a D-Link windos utility and
renamed the printer queues to par1, par2 and ser1 to designate printers
connected to parallel port 1, parallel port 2, serial port 1.

Then I configured CUPS this way:
        Backend: remote LPD queue
        Host: 192.168.0.17
        Queue: par1
That's really all you need to get the printer ports inside the D-Link
router started. Set up your printer driver and you should printing.
