My life story: <boring_bit> Back in 1989, I received my first computer in my Fathers Will, a big whopping 286 AST with 1mb of Ram and a 20mb HD, (DOS version 3or4, can't remember now) My first foray into Edlin'in my config files... :/ I kind of enjoyed the learning curve it presented me at the time. Then Win 3.1 was the thing to have, so I tried to get that going without any luck. Not enough RAM.
A friend of a friend of mine had a computer shop in Didsbury, AB, and he showed me the light with a new 486 DX4?-66 pre-loaded with Win95. A GUI finally!!! Then it crashed. I reloaded the OS, and after a month or so it crashed once again, and on and on it went with BSOD's etc [EMAIL PROTECTED] It happenned to crash once to often, and the decision was made then and there, that something had to change. At first I though maybe it was me, since every time I went near the computer, it crashed...usually hard...lol </boring bit> I needed a change from M$, and since I had little cash, and littler patience I tried a version of Red Hat. It loaded fine, but I had no idea what I was doing. Linux taught me a LOT about partitions, file systems, hardware etc, and gave me the chance to go back to my beloved Command Line that I missed since the DOS days (Albeit pretty lame compared to the Linux CL) I do use KDE mostly now with Pro-Mepis, but I have the choice to use the CL any time I see fit, as with other great F/OSS programs! It's cool to have a choice finally, and the curse of the BSOD has gone. I am liberated!!! LOL I remember talking with Jarrod back in my short stint with tech-support at Nucleus in the late 1990's (Good company by the way!), and we had some good chats about Linux back then. He was really committed to learning more, as I was. I have been 99% M$ free for around 6 years now, and LOVE IT!! I still need win9X for my GPS mapsource program, parallel port scanner and YIM camera. I use a KVM switch so I don't have to dual boot, and..... You'll have to pry Linux from my cold dead hands..... ~mike On Friday 28 October 2005 4:34 pm, Shawn wrote: > http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/8231 > > Noticed this article referenced on SlashDot today.... makes for an > interesting read... > > Why did YOU switch to Linux? > > For me it was the cost of running my own web/email server without pirating > proprietary software.
