As I understand it, most of this is handled by the kernel.  I suspect
that Kanotix does not use the same kernel as Ubuntu.  IF Kanotix is
based on debian, you should be able to install the kernel from ubuntu.

First download the kernel from http://packages.ubuntu.org

Select your version (hoary, breezy etc.) and search for kernel image.
Download the .deb file.

- From the command line type (as root or with sudo) dpkg -i
/some/path/kernel-image-2.6.xx-x_arch.deb

As an aside, I am very happy with Kubuntu, I like the Ubuntu base (once
it's sudo config is corrected) with a recent KDE on top.  I also like
some of the other Desktops such as fluxbox and Ion3.
