Qmail and Postfix are both good servers. However when you move beyond a basic setup with either, (i.e. virtual hosting), the complexity increases and you really need a good guide or lots of research to make it happen. I especially find authentication with in a virtual host environment to be problematic. But that likely has more to do with my current knowledge level. To me, qmail is easier to configure, whereas Postfix is more robust and GPL'd
I found that Kolab offered a very very easy alternative. It's a very simple install - download some files, run two scripts and you're operational. The scripts setup Postfix, Open LDAP, Apache, IMAP and a few other things for you. But it does have some limits. First, Kolab as it stands right now does not support virtual domains. Second, it installs into a chrooted environment (good for security), and this environment captures port 80, as well as the various email/pop3/imap ports. This means that you cannot easily install Kolab onto a box with an existing web server. Ideally though, email should be on a separate server anyways, so this may not be much of a problem for some. I have switched to a Kolab server over the holidays, and have no complaints yet. I even messed up my configs a little last night and was able to recover in just a few minutes (basically reinstalled). I'm just working through the process of getting Horde running with Kolab now... :) Hope this helps.
