I don't know what's in the tar files ... maybe an installer? Why don't you just use the deb package managers to install them via apt? By default there is the KDE program adept. You can launch it from the Kmenu, and it is under the "System" menu. It will ask for your password first, but then you can filter on firefox or thunderbird. Then I'm sure you can figure out how to install them from there. You could also install synaptic. From the command prompt : #sudo apt-get install synaptic Then use that. It is the same idea as adept, just a different interface (and it's not part of KDE). The deb packages are built for the system ... they install nice with no work.
