Are you using IMAP folders? That's where the screen pops up. I have seen that screen, but didn't really notice anything being tooo lengthy. If I hadn't updated a folder for a particular period, then it might rescan the folder, but otherwise once scanned, things were snappy. And a few seconds to scan a folder with thousands of mail isn't a bad thing..... That said, I have notice a significant enough difference when using Thunderbird. In comparison, Kmail IS slow.
