There is also an updated Kubuntu install CD released a couple of weeks
ago.  You may wish to try that.

Before you blow away the recovery partition you need to burn the restore
CD/DVDs.  After that you can format the drive to your heart's content.

The ipw2200 is supported under Linux.  I am not sure what your problems
are, but this might make for a good thread.  You did check
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ didn't you?

I like Compaqs for me, but I have a hard time recommending them to
others.  Generally they do not work "Out of the box" like the Acers tend
to do.
