I've found that the best way to run dual monitors with an nVidia card
is to use the TwinView feature of the nVidia (non-free) drivers.  I've
run my dual monitors this way for a few years and it works flawlessly.

Yes, I know, I'm a terrible person for contaminating my kernel with
proprietary drivers, but it makes my setup work as sexily as it
should, so I do it.
