At any rate, im my limited experience in dealing with different
frequencies on different monitors (different resolutions as well,
1024x768 on one, 1280x800 on another) it is a major PITA.  I only
tried it on gentoo though, so there is a good chance I just didn't
"get it."

After trying, failing, and giving up, I was later told that Xinerama (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinerama ) may have been a solution, you
could look into it at least.
