Are you able to disconnect the CMOS battery? That has always done it for me in the past, although the only laptops I've tried it on were >5yr old Thinkpads. Here is the service manual for that computer (assuming it is the 2500 notebook series and not the 2500 desktop series) http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf There is instructions on how to remove the CMOS battery. If anyone is looking for info on HP products (including Compaq) you just go to this page: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html and enter your product number (i.e. i have a 'presario 3470r', i had to use 'presario 2510' in this case to get any info since 2500 is not the real number.)
