You are installing the VMware tools in your VMs right? Failing that, I would try and ssh into your Kubuntu box to kill vmware. If you don't get your keyboard back, then there is an issue with your Kubuntu. I have VMware workstation and vmware server installed on two separate Kubuntu boxes, I have not seen this issue.
