A quick "my experience" story: I have VMWare Workstation, running Gentoo, and an ATI graphics card (X600). I used to (because it was fun and mildly convenient) sometimes get to X sessions going, logged in as different users. But I found that if I had VMWare running, and did the Ctrl-Alt-F8 to jump over to the other X, sometimes it would just lock up solid. I finally tracked it down to ATI's binary drivers for Linux sucking like a Dyson (sorry Hoover, you've been replaced as a metaphor. Oh, wait, that was a simile. Whatever). I've since just stopped going that (the multiple-X thing). Every once in a while, when a new version of the driver appears in an emerge, I try it again. A few builds have been ok, but then it slides back into suckiness again eventually. Can't remember if I've tried it with the most recent or not.
So, what are you running for graphics? Might be a place to look.
