Just two things that I have seen people try - you can download the alternative install, it has some additional flexibility for installation and secondly, you can try a server install, it is doesn't load up as much stuff, fewer dependencies and more likely to be successful -- you can add the kubuntu desktop by apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
