As a general rule, combo units suck. As for inkjets, they are of course usually
more expensive, however, there is a new trend, led at the moment by Kodak,
for somewhat more expensive printers with cheaper consumables, $10 B/W
$15 Color. Don't know how the Kodak units work with Linux.
