So I decided for now that I have access to other printers.  But I picked 
up a scanner.

I ended up with a cheap Canon scanner from Walwart.  After a bit of 
putzing around, it's now scanning just fine.  (less than an hour.) 
Though it appears that Feisty broke something and we need to "work 
around" it for now with the scanbuttond program...  Apparently this is 
fixed in Gutsy...
