In my haste, I misread the letter -- port 25 is blocked if you have an old modem. It appears that if you upgrade to a newer modem, you will be alright. Here is the pertinent content from the letter:
"Dear Business Internet Customer, According to our records you are listed as the primary or technical contact for this commercial Internet account. This letter is to advise you of an important network change and an opportunity to upgrade to our latest DOCSIS standard modem. After 7/15/2007 Shaw will affect a new security policy on our network. By implementing this new security measure, connections made through Port 25 (the standard SMTP port for outbound email) that are not destined or directed toward a Shaw email server, will be blocked. This change will NOT affect you if you are using Shaw’s email servers*. However, if you are running your own mail server your outgoing mail will be blocked by our port 25 policy. If you have a Motorola Cybersurfer modem you will need to exchange it (at no charge) for a DOCSIS modem. As a result, your static IP address will also change. Why is Shaw recommending changing the Internet modem? Many Cybersurfer modems, like the one our records show you are using, are coming to the end of their service cycle and replacements are no longer available from the manufacturer. If the current Motorola Cybersurfer Wave fails and needs to be replaced with a new Motorola DOCSIS modem, the resulting change of your static IP address could impact any Internet services hosted on the IP unexpectedly (for example: mail or web hosting, FTP, VPN, etc). By proactively scheduling the change of the modem at a time more convenient to you we aim to avoid such a situation and minimize the impact to your business. Are there any new advantages or features available on the new modem? The new Motorola DOCSIS modem has several advantages over the older modem, such as: · Automatic exclusion from our port 25 mail policy of your static IP. · Faster speeds with Shaw’s Xtreme-I package (optional add-on) · And most importantly, fewer static IP changes during network events and maintenance" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Watkins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CLUG General" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2007 7:04:35 PM (GMT-0700) America/Denver Subject: Re: [clug-talk] Did shaw shut down external ports? _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
