I have used SquirrelMail and I don't like it. Yes it works good and does what you need, it just is ugly. Ugly software looks cheap and causes users to form a negative and incorrect opinion of free software.
I am looking at installing RoundCube http://roundcube.net , it goes that extra step to make the program look good and to me that make a big difference in the minds of the average user.
