I too have been quite interested in this problem... I'm guessing that by syncing, you mean things like contacts and appointments, not mail itself?
My solution in the past was basically to use CalDAV and host my calendars remotely, syncing them that way, then subscribing to them from Google Calendar... however, that doesn't allow gcal to modify them, if I recall correctly, but it does propagate local changes remotely. I remember there used to be (and presumably still is) a great program for Yahoo! called IntelliSync that did perfect 2-way syncing/conflict resolution of contacts, appointments, todo lists and notes... and I've waiting for Google to release such a program, but to no avail. What's the name of the program you found that syncs the calendar between thunderbird and gcal? I'd be interested to try it out...
