Hi Richard,

This is a stab in the dark.

Run the following command(s) as root:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This goes through and creates a new xorg.conf file which may or may not help.

The other command that may help reset the kdm is

dpkg-reconfigure kdm

These may help if something got corrupted with the unexpected shutdown.
