Hello Dan,
I'm glad you decided to give Linux a go, however I fear that you might be a
little disappointed as the machine you are suggesting trying it is
significantly underpowered compared to modern machines.

I used to run on such machines and the 'main' distrobutions will likely run
like a dog on it (if at all). Just think how badly XP would run on a 33Mhz (or
is that 133MHz?) with 32MByte RAM!!

The suggestion to try Puppy Linux (http://www.puppylinux.org) is a good one, as
this distrobution is intended for older machines. I would also suggest that you
look into the lighter weight managers/desktops.

Although almost all graphic interfaces us the X system, as a user you have a
choice of window managers. The bigest of these (such as KDE or gnome) also
start up a whole load of other features which will bog down slow machines.

A overview of the 'simpler' windows managers can be found here:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Window_manager

One of the great things about Linux is the choice, unfortunately this make the
chosing process more difficult (yes, I always take ages in Blockbuster ;-).

If you wanted to try XFCE, there is a Ubuntu varient called Xubuntu (see
http://xubuntu.org)
If you wanted to try Fluxbox, there is a Ubuntu varient called Fluxbuntu (see
http://fluxbuntu.org)

I suspect with so little RAM in the machine you will not be able use the
LiveCDs at these often require quite a bit, however you should be able to
install to the harddisk using the alternative CD/ISOs.

Just to note, you can quite happily install the base bits of a modern distro
(without KDE/gnome) and then install a simpler window manager. For Ubuntu use
the alternative CD/ISO to give you a text based enviroment and then use 'sudo
apt-get install fvwm' to install fvwm (for example).

You don't say whether that machine has a CD drive (I assume so), overwise
things get a little more difficult - but never impossible and there are lots of
tricks to get arround this....

Appologies if this seems like brain overload, just remember there's lots of us
who can help your through the install process and get you running. Email here,
or catch us at one of the meetings/install fests....

Have fun,
Simon.
