Which specific iso's are you using? What's the CPU in your laptop? The reason I ask is that I have a desktop with an AMD Athlon 64 X2, and could not get any of the AMD64 iso's (Ubuntu or Kubuntu, live desktop and alternate) to completely load or install - like yours, they would reach a certain point then stop. The 32bit iso's worked fine.
