Possible short term solution:

Find a friend who has a windows computer (if you don't have one) and
also wants a bunch of photos scanned.  Use their computer to scan both
your photos and theirs.  Apply beer and pizza as necessary.

Alternately, FutureShop's liberal 7 day return policy can be useful in
situations like this "I just wanted to see if it would work with my
scanner..." ;-)

This doesn't help getting it to work with Linux, but sometimes I find
that to be more of a hassle than it's worth (same goes for getting
some things working on Windows that work better elsewhere.)
