There is no need to copy the executable to /usr/local/bin I extracted the tgz to a folder and then ran it from there. There is a zip file (vuescan.dat) that has a lot of stuff in it. If you did not copy this file as well then that could be the source of your problem. With all the documentation files, I would just run it from its own directory. Personally, I would just get a scanner supported by sane. The only way to effect change is to get a significant number of people to vote with their dollars. Additionally, if given the option, I tend to support an open software solution as opposed to a proprietary one (ie, I will donate to FLOSS projects before buying a proprietary solution).
