I have an HP 3180 Printer-copier-scanner. It's less than a year old and the scanner seems to have packed it in. All I get is a series of coloured strips like bad 60s wall paper. It doesn't matter if I try to scan colour or black and white I still get the coloured stripes. I have tried it with three different scan packages - XSane, Kooka, and VueScan, under Kubuntu 7.10. All 3 show the same result so I'm assuming the scanner is toast. I was going to need new cartridges in the next few days and with the price of cartridges that would almost cover the cost of a new device. Doesn't that seem a little crazy?
If I am correct, and I don't know how to prove I'm not, and it is scrap I'm stuck about buying just a scanner and a printer as separate devices or getting another of the combined beasts? The printer component seems to be still working so I suppose I could still use it? Also, my wife has a mini-Mac and if I bought a bluetooth enabled printer or copier could we easily share them between us with out having to build a network with a print server? Both computers are in the same room and very close to the printer.
