This is a pretty common scenario. 64-bit Linux is not 100% problem free. Some software doesn't work right (adobe flash, skype) and some drivers don't work right.
The fix is easy, however :-) If you have 3GB or less of RAM, install a 32-bit version of Linux. If you have greater than 3GB of RAM, Linux will probably not be able to use anything above 4GB, and probably not the full amount up to 4GB. All your software will work though. Just because it is a 64-bit CPU it doesn't mean you need to run a 64-bit OS. -Mark C.
