Rob's 5GB estimate is highly dependent on the distro used, what gets 
installed, etc.  But it's a "safe" figure.  Sure, some distros can install 
with much less space, while others may need a little more.  But with 
a "easy-for-idiots" distro, 5 GB should be sufficient to get started.

Install to the spare 34GB - maybe split this with Windows and create a 20 GB 
partition out of that - leaving some working space for the Windows 
installation too.

Like Graham says though backup everything important first.  While this sort of 
thing is usually straight forward, anytime you start working with partitions 
AFTER you have data on them, it is best to plan for the worst.  Murphey's Law 
applies here rather well.
