Basically, you want the midi event generated by the keyboard to be in
sync with the song you are building/playing along with. So, for
example, you may have written some parts to a song in Rosegarden, and
now you are using the Axiom to add another part. You want your midi
events generated by the keyboard to be recorded by the computer at the
right time, or else you will hear the delay when you play the whole
thing back.

This can be a complicated issue and probably not something you need to
worry about right away. Invest in some midi cables is the take home
message.

Don't bother, the Axiom has a USB midi interface built into it. When
you get your external device, it should have a midi port, you will want
to use this one when the time comes.

It depends on what you define as portable. Here is a pic of my rig:

The turntable belongs to a friend, we are digitizing some vinyl.

Also, my 64Studio box is a 939 based AMD that I picked up 2nd hand.
Pretty solid. If you do end up buying a box for this, stay far away
from anything based around the AMD AM2 or AM2+.

No apology required. This was an excellent first step. I only mention
it as we see the same questions over and over again on the mailing lists
and there are a lot of people who tend to react in a hostile fashion
after having seen the same question 100 times. Also, a lot of people
who are new to open source often barge in and offend many people because
they simply do not understand the culture. I want you to be successful.
My goal is to help prepare you for interacting with these colourful and
amazing people.

ccmixter.org is a good place to go to find samples, loops, vocal tracks
etc. that you remix or use in your own pieces. freesound.org also has a
lot of samples.
