I would suggest a NO to copying the /etc, /usr, and /var directories.
Unless you really know/understand the files being copied.
/etc is configuration information for the distribution. Copying the
Xandros configs into a Debian installation is just looking for trouble.
However there are *some* individual files that you may wish to copy
over. For instance, I run Apache on my desktop (for development
purposes) - copying over the /etc/apache2/sites-available directory
would make sense in this case - to get Apache set up the way it was
before. You may have other apps that could benefit from this sort of
thing. But if the box was a typical end-user box, this isn't too likely.
/usr and /var contain the application installations and supporting
files/libraries/resources. Each distro may handle these a little
differently. So again, moving the directories from a Xandros install to
a Debian install is just looking for trouble. And again, there may be
individual files/directories you may want/need.

Hi Folks,
Well I followed the advice of Mark and Gustin and installed Debian 5.0
from scratch. As Gustin suggested I put everything on one big partition.
I copied back /home/robin from my rdiff-backup area on my external HD,
skipping any newer files. I also have back ups of /etc, /user and
/var. Should I also copy these back to my HD?
Thanks to everyone for your help.
Robin
