I personally only see one difference between Ubuntu and Debian. That is that Debian is more "pure" when it comes to FREE software. So, this means that watching videos and MP3s take a little more knowledge/effort with Debian. Oh, and Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, which is backed by Mark Shuttleworth and some not insignificant funding...

Other than that, both use the Apt package manager, have similar directory layouts (more of a difference between say Fedora and Ubuntu/Debian), and are generally as easy to use.

For the past few years, I have favored "low maintenance" over idealism or the "cool" factor. So I have opted for Ubuntu (specifically Kubuntu). But, I feel it is time to look at other distro's to see what has changed since I was last distro hopping. It just so happens I need to wipe my laptop before the DefCon trip, and again afterwards, so this is a a good time. (For those not in the know, the DefCon network is the most hostile network on the planet!)

Anyways, hope that helps some.

Thanks to those who gave me advice on distros. I think I might try a
few. I want something for a desktop. One that I want to try is either
Debian or Ubuntu, but I would like to hear more about what the differences are
between these.

Do they have support for Nvidia?

Is Ubuntu stable?

I know Ubuntu is based on Debian, but are there some important differences?

Thanks.
