Jesse,
All your rhetorical flourish aside, I see you may have a point here (can
this be an example of the million year, million monkeys, greatest novel
even written analogy here?)
It comes down to manufacturer not putting out the products the consumer
wants to buy. Given that Linux is driver by its user community (with the
hardware manufacturers coming in later to reap the benefits), I think it
is incumbent upon us yo design the mechanism to address this deficiency.
If a solution would be, to quote you, "...[ship a system] with all the
software repositories enabled, it would prompt the user to install audio
and video codecs and it would be simple as pie to install anything the
user wanted..." then we should be doing that rather than arguing the
status quo is the way things should be.

The big problem with most of these netbooks is they run crappy Linux
distros. It's virtually impossible to install software on the Xandros
systems that ship with Eee PCs. A newbie will not understand why he
can neither install Windows software, nor the tarballs/rpms/debs that
he can download for Linux. It is also hard to get mp3 support and
other video codecs. If they shipped with UNR with all the software
repositories enabled, it would prompt the user to install audio and
video codecs and it would be simple as pie to install anything the
user wanted. Again, you need the right tool for the right job. Just as
Slackware sucks as a desktop distro, so does Xandros suck for newbies
that just want to get a few simple things working.
