Gustin,
what is wrong with the SSDs?
The SSDs that ship with netbooks are very slow. So slow that they
really do impair the performance of the machine overall (journalled file
systems are really penalized, when I said I was able to tune the netbook
remix, one of the changes was switching to ext2, and yes it did make a
difference).
In fact most SSD drives that you can buy today are in word, terrible.
For a very good, very in depth review of SSDs in general, check out this
article:

Precisely the reason I bought my netbook with a HDD. I think it will be
a while before consumer grade SSD's reach the price/performance ratio of
traditional hard drive technologies. Unless you're going to slam your
notebook around a lot I think the HDD based ones are a better buy.
Unfortunately you have to get windows on them, I have yet to find a HDD
based netbook that is preloaded with linux. Possibly why the linux
numbers have tanked, they only ship linux on the crippled 4-8gb SSD
versions of the netbooks. Even Dell was guilty of this last fall, they
shipped linux only on the 8GB SSD model of the mini.
Now if you have lots to spend Fusion IO make blisteringly fast flash
based storage, at $WORK we have had a few IO-Drives in production for
the better part of a year and they are FAST.
On a side note, I've been running freebsd on my aspire one with great
success. Ubuntu and Fedora had weird issues with the wireless card,
freebsd just worked out of the box.
