I have not played with this yet. I must say it looks freaking cool. If
only I hadn't switched away from powerful computers at home. I shudder
to think about virtual machines running on top of Intel Atoms or AMD Geodes.

The buzzword cloud is overused and miscommunicated. It is so much more
than Internet based storage. Technically I have had cloud resources for
20 years, ever since I started to dial in to my home computer from a
laptop. Functionally I have had my personal cloud storage since I ran
FTP daemons on Win9x, NT, and then Linux (of course now I use ssh +
sshfs, sometimes zssh + zmodem for nostalgia purposes).

Anyway, read the Canonical paper on this. It is loaded with Ubuntu rah
rah but there is a lot of good info in there.

You may wish to read the white paper. It pretty much explains all the
acronyms, terms and concepts used.

Do you have some servers and bandwidth hidden away somewhere? I am in
favour of it but I see it as cost prohibitive. The big deal with so
called cloud services is that large providers can meter us out bandwidth
and resources at an affordable rate. A sort of pay as you go
arrangement. The Eucalyptus stuff allows us to run these services
locally, and then migrate elsewhere if the need arises or we can keep
the data in house if we are uncomfortable outsourcing.

For the next couple of weeks I have access to a 2 CPU dual core server.
I was thinking of doing a test run with Eucalptus before I have to
deploy it as a traditional VMWare server. Perhaps this could be a
weekend workshop? Between the two of us we can handle the hardware and
networking requirements, we would just need the space and power to work.

Thoughts? Anyone else interested in taking part?
