Late 2008 I switched from Telus ($40/mth) to Fido because all I needed was basic service without multiple-fee-injection "features." I'm now on a Prepaid plan with $20 monthly refill. This is basic service with 20c / min calls & texting and I'm perfectly satisfied with it. Only caveat: getting the automatic monthly refill to work took a lot of effort -- maybe they've updated that service now.
If you purchased a phone in combination with a subscription, you most likely have been locked-in onto Telus' North-America only CDMA network. I purchased an unlocked GSM phone for use in world-wide service, then bought a Fido SIM card to get on their network. Switching provider SIMs now works like a charm both in Canada and Europe.
