I noticed Debian is conspicuously absent from your list here. Would have answered all the problems you've described here I think. Ubuntu tends to be rushed out the door in my opinion and usually has problems. Gentoo, well... who the hell has that much time on their hands to piss away? Debian is always rock-solid and quick. Even the Mint folks admit on their site that the new Debian-based version is quicker and more stable than the Ubuntu-based. ;)
