+1 on Dafydds solution. Also I use tend to use jack for this type of task. Jack is a software layer that sits on top of ALSA. It is a bit of a heavy tool with a non-trivial but not too steep learning curve. If your kids get into composition, or start using more instruments, then jack (and the jack enabled applications) will become indispensable.
FYI, most modern distributions provide a package so their is rarely a need to compile it yourself. For more info you can go straight to the jack website: http://jackaudio.org/ For some practical tutorials on this sort of thing, poke around here: http://www.64studio.com/manual/audio Cheers, On Tue, Sep 21, 2010 at 11:05 AM, Royce Souther <[email protected]> wrote: > Thanks, I will try that tonight. > > On Tue, Sep 21, 2010 at 8:17 AM, Dafydd Crosby <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> That's actually a setting in Audacity: >> Edit -> Preferences -> Recording, and then check software playthrough. >> >> -Dafydd >> >> On Tue, Sep 21, 2010 at 8:14 AM, Royce Souther <[email protected]> wrote: >> > You cannot hear what you are recording while you are recording.
