I don't actually have an xorg.conf.  On my laptop I have an Intel, which
just uses xrandr on the fly.  The desktop uses the radeonhd driver so
the same story there.  My OS is Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptop and 8.04 on
the desktop (soon to be 10.xx).

Basically for a reasonably painless dual head experience, the OP is
probably better served by getting some supported hardware.  My Dad just
picked up a Core i3 + Motherboard and 4GiB of Ram for ~$300.  The
onboard Intel works out of the box (I use the Intel stuff daily on my
laptop, so you could say I am a fan).

For under $50 you can get a 4000 series based ATI/AMD that should also
work.  nVidia has similar offerings and I would be surprised if they
were not well supported.
