If it helps, I just picked up an Asus T101MT netbook / tablet. (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX28877(ME).aspx). This has a 10 inch screen, but there is a model with a 7" screen for $90 less.

My only real complaint about it so far is that there is no easy/convenient way to make a recovery disk to get the system back to factory defaults. There *is* a way to create a backup onto a USB stick (you have to change the bios to NOT do the quick boot, then hit F9 when booting). The resulting USB stick is completely erased and becomes a single purpose thing. If you copy data to it, your backup will no longer function as you'd expect.

The device runs Ubuntu 10.10 and almost everything works out of the box. The Broadcom Atheros wifi drivers do work properly, and the touch screen works as well - at least with single touch mouse type actions. There is support to fix the little things - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/T101MT. I haven't gotten through all of these yet, but have the system at a point I consider useable for my needs.

HTH.

Hey

Thanks for all the information. My netbook is two years old so I am
starting to shop for a replacement and I will keep all this in mind.

I was thinking about getting a dell Vosotro. It is almost as small as a
netbook.

Do you think that its wireless card, Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g, would
do the trick?

Wine or NDIS wrapper? In my experience the performance of ndiswrapper
was an order of magnitude lower than a native driver. My current
laptop has an Intel wifi adapter and it works great with skype (I also
use 802.11a to avoid the congestion in the 2.4 Ghz band) and tc to
prioritize skype over web and email traffic.

More power helps, netbooks are just too underpowered for my taste.
Your problem is likely the chipset in the wifi card. Fortunately for
most netbooks it is possible to replace this device with something
better (like one of these for example

I favor an actual laptop with dual band (2.4 and 5 Ghz) support. It
seems almost everybody has a 802.11b/g/n AP on 2.4 Ghz these days.
