Just out of curiosity.. Seeing as the thread is talking about speed.. I have
been using speedtest.net to check my ISP speed and yes its telus.. I
supposedly have a 15 mbit connection.. Last year I was getting 12-14 when
checking against several nearby servers... I began having modem probs (ie
would not renew the lease) and after fighting with telus because they would
not help because I was running a linux system even tho I offered to do what
ever they required to run their tests. came down to either hookup a window
computer without a firewall running or don't bother us... I chose the
later.. And went back to my old modem that tops out at 9 mbits and all was
fine except for the slower speed

Anyway seeing as I was paying for the "hi speed" and rent on a modem that
did not work.. I finally decided to give tech support another try which
resulted in a service tech coming to my home and after trying 4 or 5 "new"
modems, countless phone conversations and an eventual rebuilding and change
of my network path and 4 hrs of the tech's time, he finally got one of the
so called new hi speed modems to actually pull an IP which proved to be
unstable for the next few days.. Where am I at now.. Well I am running the
newer Thompson modem but the funny thing is with all the time spent trying
to get the new stuff to work.. The old dlink modem still runs as fast or
faster and seems to be more reliable and is over 10 years old... the moral
of the story.. Is why did I bother.. Super wonderful high speed connection
is not so super wonderful.. On a good day may only get 6 mbits and really
lucky to get over 2 on longer links...

Not sure why I stay with telus except that I must just like pain ... Just on
the off chance speedtest.net is giving me the wrong info.. Anyone have any
suggestions of a better way to check my connection speed

Gary

PS

Tested at 4PM Friday.. With server in Calgary ( Dnload 6.24Mb & .8Mb up..
Ping 25 ms) With a server in Ft Worth ( 2.45Mb Dn and .78 Mb up .. Ping
153 ms )

Subject: [clug-talk] Bad internet... in a box

Tired of high quality networks? Want to see how the other half live?

Experience the slow, lossy, jittery internet that everybody is talking
about... with this low price add-on for your network:

Simon.

PS. To achieve the monetary loss too, place a swear jar next to your PC.

PPS. Only kinda of kidding, this project is really cool.
