When I was working for a Riverbed (WAN accelerator appliance) dealer, we bought an appliance called "Networknightmare" http://www.networknightmare.com/ which essentially did this. It had a BSD kernel with no HDD so booted up fast and could be used to simulate a number of network problems (latency, lost packets, etc). It was great for showing what the Riverbed appliance could do to improve on those conditions.

I still have the box, but I haven't used it since I stopped working with Riverbed. I think it only has 100MB interfaces (after all, it was a WAN simulator :>) ). If anybody could put it to use, contact me offline.

Regards, Greg

Tired of high quality networks? Want to see how the other half live?

Experience the slow, lossy, jittery internet that everybody is talking
about... with this low price add-on for your network:

Simon.

PS. To achieve the monetary loss too, place a swear jar next to your PC.

PPS. Only kinda of kidding, this project is really cool.
