Speedtest.net is pretty reliable. I use it to test my shaping rules. I can hit 15+ (Shaw lets you burst above your limit for a short period which skews test results), and around 10/11 mbit when I turn my shapers on (this is expected and desired behavior).
I also have a little bash script that grabs a file over http via wget or curl and then does an md5sum. Nice little quick an dirty way to test things.
