Hi All,

Haven't posted for a while & figured now would be the best time, seeing
as the list is so slow & I have some time on my hands to finally get
around to some projects.

I will be off for three weeks from work & will likely be bored stiff
most of the time. My plan is to use that time effectively & try to get
some stuff done around the house (i.e. clean the basement, fix things,
build my office, etc.). I have listed a few below...not necessarily in
order of importance though.

Projects #1 - CLUG Library Computer:
************************************
A few weeks ago an idea came up & in a couple email exchanges I had the
idea came about of having a CLUG laptop (could be desktop..but laptop
means portability) that would serve a few purposes, including but not
limited to the following:
* Documentation Library: various documents, guides & resources that
could be distributed out or shared via USB stick at meetings, etc.
* Distribution Library: A bank of common distro's or distros related to
a discussion topic, that could be burnt on request for someone bring in
a disk. Or...could have some disks & the person could pay a small fee
for it.
* CLUG Records: Databases of members, etc. that can be stored in a
single location & shared as appropriate. For example: When the new
executive comes in, the laptop gets handed to them.
* Presentation Box: Could be used by a presenter for a talk. Also a
place to store items related to that talk. Sort of like a presentation
archive. This could also be cool to web-cast a presentation or
something & perhaps respond via twitter or whatever. Sort of like a web
conference. For people that may not be able to attend in person.
* Sign-in: IN a quest to be environmentally friendly, could have
attendees sign-in.

These are just a few ideas that popped into my head & have been
suggested. Does any have anymore? Suggestions? Concerns?

I might actually have a half-decent box that might work for this and
would be willing to donate it.

Projects #2 - NAS Box:
**********************
A couple months ago I finally invested some money in a DNS-323 & a
couple of 2 TB drives, with the idea of building a NAS for my home network.

My current environment consists of the following:
* Windows 2003 Server with AD on a domain
* Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit) on a laptop
* Kubuntu 11.04 (?) (64-bit) on the same laptop in dual boot
* Lisa's desktop with Windows XP Home Edition
* Lisa's desktop dual-booting with Ubuntu 11.04
* Lisa's netbook currently running Ubuntu 11.10, but it isn't working
right, so going back to 11.04
* My netbook currently running Eeebuntu 3.0. Very long in the tooth.
* Apple eMac desktop currently running 10.4.11 (?) but hoping to upgrade
to 10.5.X

I will eventually be building a CentOS server which will virtualize
Server 2003 & a desktop that will likely run OpenSuse virtualizing
Windows XP Pro. I would also like to update my netbook to a newer OS &
use it as a kitchen computer that will partially spy on the dogs when we
aren't at home. Once I get the VPN moved off of this machine to the
laptop I can re-image it...but not having luck so far.

I was hoping to go through the dns323 wiki page, but it seems to have
disappeared. I have found a few resources that talk about it, but I
believe there was a bunch of apps on that page that people had developed
& tested to add functionality.

Some of the things I would like to do are as follows (maybe the base web
interface is enough..who knows)
* File Server: Accessible from all of the various clients...preferably
as regular drives that could be read by various software (i.e. media
players). Have had some challenges with something like Amorak seeing
network drives. Access from WAN would be nice as well.
* Media Server: Accessible on the LAN through the various clients...WAN
access or on smartphones would be nice too.
* Personal Cloud: I have been thinking of setting this up a personal
cloud as well. A couple projects I have looked at are Tonido & Amahi.
essentially I would like to be able to manage things while away from
home, access files/media, have a central repository for things like
financial data, household information (bills, etc.), recipes, etc. If
manageable from a smartphones or remotely...great!
* Redundant Backups: Drives would be set in a mirror, but would like to
add an additional drive to back up the RAID.
* Services: I am not sure where I stand on providing things like
firewalling, DHCP, DNS, LDAP/AD, etc. Thought that I would setup up
CentOS as an OpenLDAP & syncing with AD.
* Network Home: I would ideally like it if the users Homes could be
saved on the NAS & accessed through there. I know there is a risk of
things going sideways if network dies. Currently I am looking at local
profile storage & copying or syncing to a network drive (essentially a
backup). I would love it if the profiles information (i.e. Thunderbird,
Firefox, etc.) could be shared between clients...but...

Some of the things i have been looking at are listed above, but I am
open to suggestions or experiences that others have had. Drive wise I
am thinking of formatting as ext4 & running nfs to make for easier
access for all OS clients. As well...if anyone knows where I can access
the information & contents that would have been on the dns-323 wiki,
that would be great. I know some folks have done some of this
already...so anything you could share from that would be great.

Hell...if someone wants to come over & show me a few things or
whatever...or just to hand out. I am sure I could provide some beer,
coffee...maybe some grub...LOL...

I know this is a long message, but if I didn't get it all out while it
was in my mind, I know I would have forgot something.
