Interesting.  I haven't gone for that level of "build your own" yet, but a
quick google turned up those PC Engine boards for around $100-$140.  You're
right, not all that expensive (I've seen routers from $50 to $200).

My reason for undertaking this project is I'd like to get an L2TP server
running.  I tried once behind the IPCop firewall (seemed really messy to do
it on-device), but it failed.  I'm not sure if I can run L2TP directly on a
firewall device (googling the subject related to dd-wrt and tomato didn't
turn up a lot of good leads), but hey, that's why it's a Christmas project,
right?  And maybe at least if it doesn't work on-device I might succeed
with the behind-the-firewall option.
