Why don't I just re-install with say a server edition.  Chris suggested this.

Which is the easiest?  Start with server and install KDE and so forth or stay 
with Kubuntu and add in the missing packages which I will need.  WHat comes in 
the dssktop install which is "to die for".  What I see in that machine right 
now looks to be less by far in the way of apps than I have in my old Debian box 
which I've been using for years.

Like for instance I don't see much in the way of applications.
