Hmmm possibly - assuming we can somehow 'subclass' the pangocairo renderer in a similar (or better :)) way we do now with pangoft2 (and cache glyphs in textures). Of course that brings in a new dep for Clutter that could bring in other issues - i.e is Cairo as portable as freetype etc ? And there could well be performance implications too.
