Please help, is there any regulation that says that caregiveers in a nursing home should use transfer belts when transfering residents for example from w/c to bed or to commode, or during ambulation?
Bogda,
are you asking about the employee wearing belts or the resident?
There is no federal regulation that I know of, but there is a requirement to maintain current nursing practice. The restorative nursing texts indicate that residents should have a transfer belt on to promote safe transfers. the belt (used correctly) gives the caregiver a secure hold on the resident to maintain balance and prevent falls. This also helps prevent skin tears and bruising.
If you are asking about the back support belt for nursing assistant staff who lift more than 20 pounds - I don't think there is a federal law, I am not sure about state laws.
